Nicholas Brice Worthington (1816-1884)

Biography:

Born 1816.  Son of Brice John Worthington and Ann Fitzhugh (Lee) Worthington.  Married Sophia Kerr Muse; children included Joseph Muse Worthington.  Resided in Baltimore and Annapolis.  Buried in Annapolis City Cemetery.

Nicholas Brice Worthington was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from Anne Arundel County from 1844 to 1847.  He was editor of the American Farmer from 1856 until 1861.  He was one of the founders of the Maryland Agricultural College and served as secretary of the board of trustees and as a member of the board until 1876.  A part-time professor at the college for 13 years, in November of 1864 he became acting president.  In order to save the college from bankruptcy he sold 205 acres of the college's original 428 acres, and opened the college to boys over the age of twelve.  He was agricultural editor for The Baltimore Sun until 1882.
