Isaac Burley
MSA SC 3520-13645

Biography:

During the 1856 term of the Baltimore County Circuit Court, Isaac Burley, a free black from Baltimore City,  was convicted of enticing five slaves of Richardson Stansbury and one slave of Salathial Cole to run away. He was sentenced to serve thirty-six years, six years for each charge, in the Maryland Penitentary. The law, however, dictated that since Burley had previously served time in the Penitentary on an unknown charge, that he be sold out of the state of Maryland for a period of thirty-six years, despite the fact he was free.
