Biography:

Born December 28, 1839 in Annapolis, Maryland.  Son of James Boyle Brewer (1806-c. 1869) and Eliza Ann Rawlings Brewer.   Moved to Baltimore in 1862.  Married first wife Anne Worthington Dorsey (c. 1848-1885), June 11, 1868; married second wife Mary Benzinger (c. 1867-1889), November 16, 1886.  Died November 6, 1911 in Baltimore.

Editor, Maryland Republican, Annapolis, c. 1858.  Columnist, Southern Herald, Baltimore, 1862.  Associate, Evening Transcript, 1862-64.  Founder, The Evening Post, 1864.   President,  Democratic City Convention, c. 1865.  Columnist, New York World, 1865.  Editor, Sunday Telegram, 1865-c. 1868.  Organizer, Anti-Registry Convention, 1866.  Chair, Democratic Executive Committee, Democratic City Convention, Baltimore, 1867.  Delegate, Baltimore City, 1867 Constitutional Convention of Maryland.  Clerk, Baltimore City Circuit Court, 1867-79.  Member-at-large and chair, Democratic Executive Committee, 1870.  Part owner and editor, The Baltimore Daily News, 1874-.  Member, Odd Fellows, Masons.
