Henry F. Garey (1821-1892)

Biography:

Born September 5, 1821, Baltimore, Maryland.  Son of Jeremiah Garey (d. 1828) and Elizabeth Burke Garey.  Attended Augusta College, Augusta, Kentucky, 1841-43 (theology); Transylvania University, Lexington, Kentucky, 1843-44 (theology).  Studied law at the Kentucky firm of Purtle & Speed, 1845-46.  Married first wife, Ms. Ball (d. 1852), in Kentucky.  Resided in Baltimore after 1856.  Admitted to the Maryland bar, 1856.  Married second wife, Ms. Richardson, in Baltimore.  Children:  Henry F. (1856-1905), and one daughter.  Died July 28, 1892 in Baltimore.

Administrator, Henry Institute, New Castle, Kentucky, 1846-48.  Lawyer, Garey & Roberts, Columbia, Missouri, 1848.  Assistant elector from Missouri, presidential election of 1848.  Grain and cattle producer, Columbia, Missouri, 1849-56.  Chair, compromise delegation at Missouri State Democratic Convention, 1852.  Elector from Missouri, 1852 presidential election.  Missouri state's attorney, Second Judicial Circuit, elected August 31, 1852.  Curator and secretary of the board of curators, Missouri State University, 1851-56.   Resumed the practice of law in Baltimore, 1856.  Delegate, Baltimore City Democratic Convention, 1867.  Delegate, Baltimore City, 1867 Constitutional Convention of Maryland.  Associate judge,  Supreme Branch of Baltimore City, Court of Common Pleas, 1867-78.  Association judge, Baltimore City Court, 1878-.  Member, Odd Fellows; Methodist Episcopal Church.
