Born Kathleen Hartington Kennedy in Greenwich, Connecticut, July 4, 1951. Oldest child of Robert F. and Ethel (Skakel) Kennedy. Harvard University, B.A. (history & literature), cum laude; University of New Mexico School of Law, J.D., 1978. Admitted to Maryland bar, January 18, 1985. Catholic. Married David Lee Townsend, 1973. Four daughters: Meaghan Anne Kennedy Townsend (b. 1977); Maeve Fahey Kennedy Townsend (b. 1979); Rose Katherine Kennedy "Kate" Townsend (b. 1983); Kerry Sophia Kennedy Townsend (b. 1991).
