B.W. Mike Donovan Dies

B.W. Mike Donovan, 83, a retired Air Force major and Prince George's County Democrat who served in the House of Delegates and the state Senate, died Nov. 18 at a hospital in Myrtle Beach, S.C., of complications from a fall a day earlier.

Mr. Donovan, a District Heights resident during his political career, was in the House of Delegates from 1967 to 1978 and had been assistant majority leader.

He was in the state Senate from 1979 until he retired in 1987. He was assistant majority whip and co-chairman of the Protocol Committee.

At his death, he was a Myrtle Beach resident. He had spent the past two years living with his daughter in Laurel.

Bernard Webster Donovan was born in Baltimore. Later, he legally changed his name to include Mike, his Air Force nickname.

He joined the Army Air Corps in the late 1930s. He served in the Army Air Forces in Europe during World War II and flew B-24 bombers. He joined the Air Force after it became a separate military branch in 1947 and retired in 1964. His final active-duty assignment was helping oversee maintenance at Andrews Air Force Base.

He attended Butler University in Indiana and the University of Maryland.

His memberships included the American Legion, the Elks, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Knights of Columbus and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Annapolis.

His wife of 61 years, Anna Green Donovan, died in April.

Survivors include two children, Nancy L. Carr of Laurel and John M. Donovan of Queenstown, Md.; a sister, Marianna Asher of Severna Park; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
