Joseph Stewart Cottman (1803-1863)

Biography:

Born August 16, 1803, near Allen, Maryland.  Attended Princeton College, 1821; Yale College, 1822-23; studied law.  Admitted to the bar in Somerset County, 1826.  Married 1) Susan, 2.) Elizabeth Upshur Dennis, September 12, 1832. Two daughters: Elizabeth and Esther.  Died Junary 28, 1863 at "Motherton" near Allen, Maryland.  Buried at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Princess Anne, Maryland.

Practiced law in Princess Anne, Maryland, and also engaged in agricultural and literary pursuits. House of Delegates, Somerset County, 1831-32, 1834 and 1839. Maryland State Senate, Eastern Shore, 1836-37. Presidential elector, Somerset County, 1848. U.S. House of Representatives, 1851-53.
