Richard Sprigg, Jr. (ca. 1769-1806)

Biography:

Born in Prince George's County, Maryland, c. 1769.  Son of Edward Sprigg (ca. 1721-1790).  Nephew of Thomas Sprigg.   No evidence of marriage or children.  Episcopalian.  Resided near Upper Marlboro, Prince George's County.  Died on March 5 or 20, 1806 in Charleston, South Carolina.

Member, Maryland House of Delegates for Prince George's County, 1792-94 (resigned).  Member, Maryland Senate for the Western Shore, 1794-95.  U.S. Representative from Maryland for the 2nd District, 1796-99; 1801-02 (elected as a Republican to fill a vacancy caused by the resignation of Gabriel Duvall; took his seat May 5, 1796 and served until March 3, 1799; reelected and served from March 4, 1801 until his resignation in January 1802).   Chief judge, county courts of St. Mary's, Calvert, Charles and Prince George's counties (1st Judicial  District), 1802-03 (commissioned January 28, 1802; resigned February 11, 1803).    Judge, General Court, 1802-05.  Associate judge, 1st District Court, St. Mary's, Charles and Prince George's counties, 1806.  Associate judge, Maryland Court of Appeals, appointed January 27, 1806 and served until his death on March 20, 1806.
