John Buchanan (1772-1844)

Biography:

Born in Prince George's County, 1772.  Son of Thomas Buchanan and Mary Cook or Anne Cooke Buchanan.  Attended Charlotte Hall School, St. Mary's County; studied law under Judge Robert White in Winchester, VA and John Thomson Mason in Hagerstown.  Married Sophia Williams; son Thomas Eli Buchanan.  Resided at "Woodland," near Williamsport, Washington County.  Died at Woodland, November 6, 1844.

House of Delegates, Washington County, 1797-99.  Chief Judge, Washington County Circuit Court, 5th Judicial Circuit, 1806-44.  Associate Judge, Maryland Court of Appeals, 1806-24; Chief Judge, 1824-44.   Presidential Elector, 1817.  Director, Hagerstown Bank, 1820-25.
