Marion deKalb Smith (1850-1910)

Biography:

Born near Kennedyville, Kent County, October 16, 1850.  Son of James Smith and Anne B. Knock Hines Smith.  Attended Washington College and graduated in 1870; studied law under Richard Hynson.  Married Addie Burchinal on June 5, 1878; children Marion deKalb, Jr.,  Anna Burton.  Died in Chestertown, Kent County, March 14, 1910.  Buried in Chestertown Cemetery.

Lawyer.  Deputy clerk of the circuit court for Kent County.  State's attorney, 1883-.  Comptroller of the treasury, 1892-96.  Member, Methodist Episcopal Church.  As state's attorney in 1890, Smith took a hard line in enforcing the state's oyster laws when he refused to pardon two oyster dredgers who were serving one-year sentences for firing on the state boat Helen Baughman.
