Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

    State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   Whereas James H
Cook negro hath made application to me for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to law   And Whereas on the Oath of Thomas D Case has been
proven that said James H Cook was free born   I do therefore grant
this certificate:  He is now about twenty two years of age five feet
seven & three quarter inches high or thereabouts of a chesnutt complexion
was born and raised in Caroline county and has a scar over his right eye
and one on his right cheek      In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe
name and affix the seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County
(seal)   this 28th day of January A. D. 1858

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   Whereas James H Sudler
(negro) hath made application to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably
to law   And whereas on the oath of Robert Pippin has been proven that
said James H Sudler was free born.   I do therefore grant this certificate
He is now about twenty three years of age five feet and a half inches
high or thereabouts of a mullatto complexion was born and raised in Caroline
County and has a small scar on his chin.   In testimony whereof I hereunto
(seal)   subscribe my name and affix the seal of the Circuit Court for
           Caroline County this sixteenth day of February Anno Domini
           1858

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit      Whereas Daniel Hubbard
hath made application to me for a certificate of his freedom   And whereas on
the oath of Francis A Sisk has been proven that said Daniel Hubbard
is free:   I do therefore grant this certificate.  He is now about Sixty three
years of age five free eleven and a half inches high or thereabouts of a
