Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:   Whereas Louis
Groce hath made application to me for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to law and whereas on the Oat of Benjamin Conner
has been proven that said Louis Groce was free born.  I do therefore
grant this Certificate.  He is now about twenty one years of age five
feet Seven inches high or thereabout of a Chesnut Complexion was born
& raised in Caroline County and has no notable mark or scar
that I have observed
            In Testimony Whereof I hereunto Subscribe my name and
(Seal)   affix the Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this
            twenty fourth day of January Anno Domini Eighteen Hundred
and Sixty

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas Louisa
Black hath made application to me for a Certificate of her freedom
agreeably to law and whereas on the Oath of Thomas Numbers has
been proven that said Louisa Black was free born.  I do therefore
grant this Certificate.  She is now about twenty Seven Years of age
five feet one and a half inches high or thereabout of a black Complexion
was born & raised in Caroline County and has a scar near the first
joint of the left thumb and one on the right side of her neck and
has no other notable mark or scar that I have observed
(Seal)   In Testimony Whereof I hereunto subscribe my name and affix the
            Seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County this 31.st day of January
        A D 1859
