Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas at a County Court begun and held at
Denton in and for Caroline County in the first monday of March in the year of our Lord
one thousand eight hundred and twenty one a certain negro woman ^named^ Margaret by
Judgment of the same Court recovered Judgment of her freedom of a certain John
Stevens of Caroline County ^and whereas also upon the oath of John W Vaux of Caroline County^ that the said negro woman named Margaret for whom
this certificate is made is the same woman named as having recovered Judgment
of her freedom as aforesaid I do therefore grant her said application and hereby certify
that from her own account she is twenty six years of age or thereabouts five feet and
one ^half^ inch high of a dark brown complexion was born and raised in Caroline County and
has a small scar crosswise on the left side of her neck and another scar of a cut crosswise
on the middle of her left arm and has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal
            of my office this 12th day of August Anno Domini 1833

Judgment of the same Court recovered Judgment of her freedom of a certain John Stevens of
Caroline County; And whereas also upon the oath of John W. Vaux of Caroline County that the
said negro woman named Henrietta for whom this certificate is made is the same woman
named as having recovered Judgment of her freedom as aforesaid I do therefore grant her said
application and hereby certify that from her own account she is in her seventeenth year of age
four feet eight and one half inches high or thereabouts has a small scar of a cut nearly
perpendicular on the left side of her forehead and another scar crosswise on the right side and
lower part of her neck and tolerable large flesh mole rather on the back and left side of her
neck and two other scars on the inside of her right arm one above and the other below the
elbow joint born and raised in Caroline County and of a black complexion and no other
notable marks or scars that I have observed

            office this 12th day of August A. D. 1833
