Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:   Whereas Jennett Pembleton
hath made application to me for a certificate of her freedom agreeably
to law and whereas on the oath of Joseph Turner has been proven that
said Jennett Pembleton was free born  I do therefore grant this certificate
she is now about twenty five years of age five feet four and one
half inches high or there about of a chesnutt complexion was
born & raised in Caroline County and has one scar on the little finger
of the right hand caused from the cut of a hatchett and has no other
notable mark or scar that I have observed
               In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name
(Seal)      and affix the seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County
               this 4th day of April Anno Domini 1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas Washington
Satterfield hath made application to me for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to law:  and whereas on the oath of William M A Liden has
been proven that said Washington Satterfield was free born  I do therefore
grant this certificate he is now about twenty five years of age five
feet six inches high or thereabout of a Chesnutt brown complexion
was born and raised in Caroline County and has a scar on his
nose between his eyes & has a large scar on his forhead in the edge
of his hair and one other scar on his right arm caused by the bight of
a Dog & has no other notable marke or scar that I have observed
                         In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my
    (seal)             name and affix the seal of the Circuit Court for
                         Caroline County this fourteenth day of April
                         Anno Domini Eighteen hundred and fifty seven

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:      Whereas Asbury White hath
made application to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to law:
And whereas on the oath of John E Starkey has been proven that said Asbury
White was free born   I do therefore grant this certificate.   He is now
about 28 years of age five feet seven inches high or thereabout of a chesnutt
complexion was born and raised in Caroline County and has one large
scar on the left side of his face just below the ear cause by a knife and
has no other notable mark or scar that I have observed
                      In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name
       (Seal)      and affix the seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County
                      this 13th day of June Anno Domini 1857
