          This Indenture made this twenty ninth day of
June in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight
hundred & Eighteen   Witnesseth that we Isaac Paul
and mary Paul wife of the said Isaac and
Vachel Brown and Philip Howard of anne
arundel County in the State of maryland for and in
consideration of the sum of one dollar United States
currency to us in hand paid at and before the
sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt
whereof is hereby acknowledged have released from
slavery manumitted and set free and by these presents
do release from slavery manumit and set free the two
following persons of Colour that is to say Maria
Howard wife of the said Philip Howard under the
age of forty five years who was formerly considered
and held as the slave of the said Isaac Paul mary
Paul and Vachel Brown and by them relinquished
unto the above named Philip Howard her husband
by an instrument of writing for that purpose bearing
date the fourth day of august last past; and also
Mary ann Howard daughter of the said Philip
Howard who was purchased by her said father of
the said Isaac Paul mary Paul and Vachel Brown
for the sum of one hundred dollars which sum was
paid by the said father in fulfilment of the said
purchase agreeably to a receipt in writing held by
him therefor bearing date also on the aforesaid fourth
day of august last past which said maria
Howard and mary ann Howard aged respectively
as aforesaid are each of them of a healthy Constitution
sound in mind and body and Capable by labour
of procuring each for herself sufficient food and
