WHEREAS, The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine stimulates growth
in these Maryland industries through education, new feeding and
reproduction technologies, and herd health management; and

WHEREAS, The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine provides vital
care and treatment of pets, and these animals play an important
role as companions and protectors, supplying love and devotion,
especially to Maryland's elderly, handicapped, and juvenile
citizens; and

WHEREAS, The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine discovers
information through research that increases the nation's food
supply; eliminates pain and suffering in livestock and companion
animals; and unlocks the enigmas of many human diseases; and

WHEREAS, The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine safeguards the
public health by evaluating and testing the quality of the
products of food processing plants, restaurants, and water
supplies; and

WHEREAS, As epidemiologists, they investigate disease
outbreaks such as food-borne illness, plague, or rabies; and

WHEREAS, The first graduate veterinarian in the United
States settled in Maryland in 1803, establishing the art and
science of veterinary medicine for the first time on the North
American Continent; and

WHEREAS, The Maryland Veterinary Medical Association was
established on September 28, 1885, to improve the quality of the
health care of domestic animals and to utilize innovative
scientific techniques in that care; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF MARYLAND, That the
significant achievements and services of Maryland's Doctors of
Veterinary Medicine be recognized in this centennial year of the
Maryland Veterinary Medical Association; and be it further

RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution be forwarded by the
Department of Legislative Reference to Mr. Ray Thompson,
Executive Director, Maryland Veterinary Medical Association,
11031 McCormick Road, Hunt Valley, Maryland 21031.
