AN ACT concerning
Unemployment Insurance - Coverage of Sports Officials
FOR the purpose of excluding from the definition of employment,
FOR the purpose of altering the provision of the unemployment
insurance laws relating to what the term employment does not
include by repealing language referring to service performed
in an amateur athletic contest by a referee, umpire,
linesman, or other official on a per game fee basis for
certain associations of sport officials; and providing for
the intent of this Act.
BY repealing and reenacting, with amendments,

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY - THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:

20.
As used in this article, unless the context clearly requires
otherwise:
(g) (8) "Employment" does not include:
[ (xx) Service performed in an amateur
athletic contest by a referee, umpire, linesman, or other
official on a per game fee basis for an association of referees,
umpires, linesmen, or other officials [ . ] IF THE ASSOCIATION IS
NOT ORGANIZED UNDER A GOVERNMENTAL ENTITY OR IS NOT AN
ORGANIZATION DESCRIBED IN § 501(C)(3) OF THE UNITED STATES
INTERNAL REVENUE CODE WHICH IS EXEMPT FROM INCOME TAX UNDER §
501(A) OF THAT CODE.
SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That it is the intent
of the General Assembly, that the repeal of the exemption from
covered employment as described in Section 20(g)(8)(xx) is based
