LAWS OF MARYLAND

Ch. 313

WHEREAS, There is no officially recognized State shell or
State fossil in Maryland; and

WHEREAS, The 4 ribbed fossil snail shell, Ecphora
quadricostata (Say), symbolizes a significant part of the natural
history of Maryland; and

WHEREAS, In 1685, an Ecphora quadricostata shell found in
St. Mary's County became the first fossil ever illustrated from
North America; and

WHEREAS, 1984 marks the 350th anniversary of the founding of
Maryland; and

WHEREAS, Adoption of this symbol would add a new dimension
to the 350th anniversary celebration; now, therefore,

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:

THE ECPHORA QUADRICOSTATA (SAY) IS THE STATE FOSSIL SHELL.

SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall
take effect October 1, 1984.

CHAPTER 314

(Senate Bill 197)

AN ACT concerning

Rabies - Animal Quarantine

FOR the purpose of requiring an animal that exposes a human to
rabies to be quarantined in a place and manner provided by
the local health officer or the public health veterinarian
for a certain time; allowing certain animals to be
quarantined in the residence of their owners; providing that
the public health veterinarian or local health officer may
order the immediate and humane destruction of an animal

under certain circumstances; providing for the rabies

examination, of an animal under quarantine; and generally
relating to rabies and animal quarantine.
