410 To all to whom this p.rsent writeing shall Come I Nich.o Thomas Jones Mariner and Comander of the ship Oranoak Merch.t belonging unto Col Robert Quary Comeing into the Capes of Virginia on the 24.th day of July last About seaven a Clock in the Morning Espyed a ship att an Anchor within Linhaven Bay under the Kings Colours with Jack Ancient and Pennant abroad which I took to be a Man of Warr he fired two Guns Comanding me on Board where the Cap.t told me if I had not Come he would have sunk Me there was lying by him a fly Boat which the day before he had taken I observed the Company and the Cap.t himselfe to have gould Chains ab.t their Necks the Cap.t had a gold tooth Picker hanging att it the Cap.t then Examined me whence I Came and with what loaden told him he then Demanded my Clearance which when perused he said the Porke pease and Tallow he would have and what Elce he had occasion for & p.rsently told me he was a Pyrate in the Interim Came one that I knew had belonged to a Briganteen Called the Charles one fears Comander his name Lux which Briganteen had not long before been taken by the s.d Pyrate this Lux Encouraged me telling me the Cap.t would not wrong me otherwise then to take what he wanted or what he had a Mind to then my Sloop was Comanded on Board the Pyrate the hatches Opened and diverse goods taken and put on Board the s.d Pyrate but my selfe being Confined Could not See what was taken in the mean while the Cap.t Comanded me into his Cabbin and gave me a short Relation of his Transactions telling me he was a Welshman of Glamoganshire his name John James his ship Called the Alexander which he had taken from one Cap.t Writt of South Carolina ab.t the Bay of Campeactra or the Bay of Vandorus loaden with loagwood he then swore he would have some of my Company and would burn My Sloop I then begg'd to have my Sloop againe and that he would not for ever ruine me who was his Countryman and that rather then go with him I would burn with the Sloop he then Compelled my Mate John Lucas and William Steward to go with him Comanding them out of my sloop who appeared very unwilling begging and earnestly Intreating the Cap.t for their Liberty but all in Vaine when he had thus taken my men and what he pleased out of my Sloop he Comanded me to go in my Sloop to fetch him Water from aboard the flyboat which when I had done a strong tide p.rtended my Comeing on Board the Pyrate again upon which he weighed & Came to us and took in the Water and Likewise my Selfe again on Board and there detained me till ab.t eight att Night att which time one of |
