(3) "NURSE PRACTITIONER" MEANS AN INDIVIDUAL
TO WHOM DUTIES ARE DELEGATED IN ACCORDANCE WITH
REGULATIONS PROMULGATED UNDER §122(6) 291(B) OF ARTICLE
43 OF THIS CODE.
(3) (4) "PRIMARY CARE" MEANS THE FOLLOWING
AREAS OF MEDICINE: FAMILY PRACTICE, GENERAL PRACTICE,
INTERNAL MEDICINE, OB/GYN, PEDIATRICS GENERAL INTERNAL
MEDICINE, AND GENERAL PEDIATRICS.
(4) (5) "ACCREDITED PROGRAM IN PHYSICIAN
ASSISTANT OR NURSE PRACTITIONER TRAINING" MEANS A PROGRAM
WHICH:
(I) IS ACCREDITED BY THE AMA OR ANA;
(II) PRODUCES GRADUATES ELIGIBLE TO
TAKE THE PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT CERTIFYING
EXAMINATION OF THE NATIONAL COMMISSION ON THE
CERTIFICATION OF PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS; OR, IN THE CASE OF
NURSE PRACTITIONERS, ARE ELIGIBLE TO TAKE THE PRIMARY
CARE IN ADULT AND FAMILY NURSING PRACTICE CERTIFYING EXAM
OR SUCH OTHER EXAMINATION AS MAY BE REQUIRED BY THE BOARD
OF NURSING EXAMINERS UNDER THE AUTHORITY OF §§290 THROUGH
302 OF THIS CODE;
(III) IS PART OF, OR HAS A FORMAL
ARRANGEMENT WITH, A MEDICAL EDUCATION CENTER; AND
(IV) FOCUSES ON DEVELOPING PRIMARY CARE
SKILLS AND INCLUDES SUBSTANTIAL CLINICAL EXPERIENCE IN
PRIMARY CARE AS DEFINED IN SUBSECTION (B) (2) OF THIS ACT.
FOR. PURPOSES OF THIS ACT, AN ACCREDITED PROGRAM DOES NOT
INCLUDE SPECIALTY PROGRAMS IN DISCIPLINES OTHER THAN
THOSE WHICH COMPRISE PRIMARY CARE AS DEFINED IN
SUBSECTION (B)(2).
(5) (6) "MEDICAL EDUCATION CENTER" MEANS
AN INSTITUTION, INCLUDING UNIVERSITY HEALTH SCIENCE
CENTERS AND COMMUNITY HOSPITALS, WHOSE OBJECTIVES INCLUDE
THE EDUCATION OF MEDICAL AND ALLIED HEALTH PERSONNEL.
FOR PURPOSES OF THIS ACT THESE CENTERS MUST HAVE EITHER
RESIDENCY PROGRAMS OR FULL DEPARTMENTS, OR A COMBINATION
THEREOF, IN AT LEAST THREE OF THE PRIMARY CAFE AREAS AS
DEFINED IN SECTION (B) (2) OF THIS ACT.
(6) "FULL-TIME STUDENT" MEANS AN INDIVIDUAL
PURSUING A FULL-TIME COURSE OF STUDY LEADING TO
CREDENTIALS AS A PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT IN PRIMARY CARE.
(7) "PROGRAM" MEANS MARYLAND PHYSICIAN
ASSISTANT - NURSE PRACTITIONER TRAINING PROGRAM.
(C) (1) THERE IS A MARYLAND PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT
- NURSE PRACTITIONER TRAINING PROGRAM TO PROVIDE
FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO INSTITUTIONS WITH ACCREDITED
TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS AND NURSE
PRACTITIONERS IN PRIMARY CARE WITHIN MARYLAND. IT
