1798 Federal Direct Tax - Maryland

The seven-hundred and twenty-ninth volume of the Archives of Maryland consists of records of the 1798 Federal Direct Tax as it pertained to the State of Maryland. The volume contains images of the extant 1798 Maryland tax lists. Additional material includes a spreadsheet of household returns aggregated by hundred or Baltimore City ward for comparative purposes (courtesy of Professor Carole Shammas), a transcript of the return for Middle Neck Hundred (Annapolis and adjacent area) with identification (where possible) of property location (keyed to NEH lot history parcel and section numbers), and an introduction.
