(B)    AS USED IN THIS SECTION, "FAMILY PRACTICE"
MEANS THAT MEDICAL SPECIALTY WHICH IS CALLED FAMILY
PRACTICE AND WHICH PROVIDES PERSONAL PHYSICIANS WHO SERVE
AS FIRST MEDICAL CONTACTS FOR PATIENTS, WHO PROVIDE A
MEANS OF ENTERING THE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM, AND WHO ACCEPT
RESPONSIBILITY FOR A PATIENT'S TOTAL HEALTH CARE. "AREA
OF NEED" MEANS A GEOGRAPHICAL AREA WITHIN THIS STATE
WHICH [[THE SECRETARY OF HEALTH AND MENTAL HYGIENE, IN
CONSULTATION WITH THE MEDICAL AND CHIRURGICAL FACULTY OF
MARYLAND AND OTHER PROFESSIONAL GROUPS,]] A COMMITTEE
COMPOSED OF THE SECRETARY OF HEALTH AND MENTAL HYGIENE, A
DESIGNATED REPRESENTATIVE OF THE MEDICAL AND CHIRURGICAL
FACULTY OF MARYLAND AND THE CHAIRMEN OF THE ACCREDITED
RESIDENCY PROGRAMS IN FAMILY PRACTICE DETERMINES FROM
TIME TO TIME TO HAVE AN ACUTE NEED FOR PHYSICIANS IN
FAMILY PRACTICE. "SUPPORT COSTS" MEANS SALARY, HOUSING,
AND FRINGE BENEFITS PAID OR SUPPLIED TO A RESIDENT
PHYSICIAN. "MARYLAND FAMILY PRACTICE RESIDENT" MEANS A
PHYSICIAN TRAINING IN A 3 YEAR ACCREDITED FAMILY PRACTICE
PROGRAM LEADING TO BOARD CERTIFICATION IN THE SPECIALTY
KNOWN AS FAMILY PRACTICE AND WHO RECEIVES SUPPORT UNDER
THE PROVISIONS OF THIS SECTION.

(C)    THERE IS CREATED A MARYLAND FAMILY PRACTICE
RESIDENCY PROGRAM TO PROVIDE FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR
RESIDENTS TRAINING IN ACCREDITED FAMILY PRACTICE
RESIDENCY PROGRAMS IN MARYLAND. IT CONSISTS OF 20 ANNUAL
RESIDENCIES (HEREINAFTER REFERRED TO AS MARYLAND FAMILY
PRACTICE RESIDENCIES) TO BE DISTRIBUTED AMONG THE
HOSPITALS IN MARYLAND WHICH OFFER ACCREDITED FAMILY
PRACTICE RESIDENCY PROGRAMS, THESE RESIDENCIES SHALL BE
IN ADDITION TO AND NOT A SUBSTITUTION FOR THE RESIDENCIES
PRESENTLY FUNDED BY HOSPITALS WHICH OFFER ACCREDITED
FAMILY PRACTICE PROGRAMS.

(D)    ELIGIBILITY FOR BECOMING A MARYLAND FAMILY
PRACTICE RESIDENT IS LIMITED TO PERSONS (1) WHO ARE
GRADUATES OF AND HOLDING A MEDICAL DEGREE FROM AN
APPROVED MEDICAL SCHOOL, (2) WHO HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED INTO
AN APPROVED FAMILY PRACTICE RESIDENCY PROGRAM IN MARYLAND
AND (3) WHO FURNISH A SURETY BOND TO THE STATE OF
MARYLAND, THE CONDITION OF WHICH BOND IS THAT THE
APPLICANT, PROVIDED HE COMPLETES THE FAMILY PRACTICE
RESIDENCY, ENGAGE IN THAT SPECIALTY IN AN AREA OF NEED
FOR A PERIOD OF NOT LESS THAN THREE YEARS. THE BOND
SHALL BE IN AN AMOUNT NOT LESS THAN THE SUPPORT RECEIVED,
[[AND]] WITH SUCH SECURITY AS MAY BE DETERMINED BY THE
STATE SCHOLARSHIP BOARD OR ITS SUCCESSOR AGENCY.

(E)    EACH YEAR, THE STATE SCHOLARSHIP BOARD OR ITS
SUCCESSOR AGENCY SHALL MAKE KNOWN AT MEDICAL SCHOOLS BOTH
WITHIN AND WITHOUT THIS STATE THE AVAILABILITY AND
CONDITIONS OF MARYLAND FAMILY PRACTICE RESIDENCIES UNDER
THIS SECTION. APPLICANTS FOR THESE RESIDENCIES SHALL
