Howard County                            2629

20-69 of the Baltimore County Code, 1968, as amended, title "Pen-
sions and Retirement," Article III. Fire and Police Departments.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the County Council of Baltimore
County, Maryland,
that Section 20-69 of the Baltimore County Code,
1968 (1970 Cumulative Supplement) title "Pensions and Retire-
ment," Article III. Fire and Police Departments, be and it is hereby
repealed and re-enacted with amendments, to read as follows:

Section 20-69. Benefits for [widows and children] families of
members of volunteer fire and ambulance companies
killed in line of duty.

In the event a member of any volunteer fire or ambulance
company of the county is killed in active discharge of his duties as
a member of such volunteer fire or ambulance company or dies as
a result of injuries sustained in the active discharge of such
duties, such death occurring after [January 1, 1951] July 30, 1971
the county is hereby authorized and directed to pay his widow, until
her death or remarriage, the sum of [fifty] eighty dollars per month,
and to pay for the support of each infant child surviving him the
sum of [fifteen] thirty dollars per month, to be paid to the mother,
guardian or person actually caring for such child, until such child
reaches the age of eighteen years. In the event said member is unmar-
ried, a lump sum death benefit payment in the amount of Two Thou-
sand Dollars shall be paid to the parents or legal guardian or in the
event there are no parents or legal guardian, then to the personal
representative of the estate of said deceased member.
The county
is directed to levy upon the assessable property of the county each
year a sum sufficient to make the payments required hereunder or
that may have accrued accounting from the date of death of such
volunteer fireman or volunteer ambulanceman.

Section 2. And be it further enacted, that this Act is hereby
declared to be an emergency measure affecting the public health,
safety or welfare, and having been passed by the affirmative vote of
five members of the County Council, the same shall take effect from
the date of its enactment.
