1352                            LAWS OF MARYLAND                       CH. 676

"In General," amending the laws concerning salary increases to
police employees in the Department of Maryland State Police with
particular respect to salaries paid after promotions.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 5(d) of Article 88B of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land (1964 Replacement Volume and 1967 Supplement), title "State
Police," subtitle "In General," be and it is hereby repealed and re-
enacted with amendments to read as follows:

(d) Upon conversion from the old pay schedule to the new sched-
ule hereinbefore provided, no police employee shall receive less than
a ten per cent (10%) increase, and he will be entitled to that pay
step in his current rank which is nearest the sum of his pay under
the old schedule plus ten per cent thereof.

July 1, 1967, shall become for all police employees the anniversary
date upon which subsequent pay steps are earned, except for those
employees whose date of employment is subsequent to July 1, 1967.
In this latter case the date of employment will be the anniversary
date upon which subsequent steps are earned.

Upon promotion a police employee shall be entitled to the pay
specified for the new rank in the same step as that occupied before
promotion [.], unless this step would place him in a higher pay
step than that currently held by any member in that rank who has
equal or higher total service time. In this event, a police employee
upon promotion is entitled to pay specified for the new rank in the
step next lower than that occupied before promotion.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act is hereby de-
clared to be an emergency measure and necessary for the immediate
preservation of the public health and safety and having been passed
by a yea and nay vote supported by three-fifths of all the members
elected to each of the two houses of the General Assembly, the same
shall take effect from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 676
(House Bill 453)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 48 of
Article 26 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1966 Replacement
Volume), title "Courts", subtitle "Salaries of Judges," providing
for certain salary payments to resident judges of the circuit courts
for Allegany, Howard and Garrett Counties and adding a clarifying
change in the existing provision for such payments to the judges
of the circuit court for Washington County.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 48 of Article 26 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
