CHAPTER 657
(Senate Bill 476)

AN ACT to waive the provision of Section 9 of Chapter 903 of the
Acts of 1963, said section relating to the time by which projects
contained in the General Construction Loan of 1963 must be placed
under contract, insofar as the provisions of said section relate to
an item contained in said Act for the Department of Mental Hy-
giene—Headquarters and relating to the construction of a Psychia-
tric Research Institute; and to extend for two years, the period
during which the said item may be placed under contract.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That the provisions of Section 9 of Chapter 903 of the Acts of 1963,
be and they are hereby waived insofar as they impose a time for
placing under contract an item, Section 5 (I)(l), in said Chapter
903 and found on page 2103 of the Laws of 1963, making available
to the Department of Mental Hygiene—Headquarters the sum of
$450,000 for the construction of a Psychiatric Research Institute.
There shall be allowed an additional period of two years, beginning
on the effective date of this Act, for placing this project under con-
tract. If this project shall not have been placed under contract within
a period of two years, beginning on the effective date of this Act,
then it shall be deemed to have been abandoned and the other pro-
visions of Section 9 of Chapter 903 of the Acts of 1963 shall be fully
effective as to this project.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1965.

CHAPTER 658
(Senate Bill 493)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37(x) of
Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1964 Replace-
ment Volume), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and
Duties", increasing the compensation of the Sheriff of Baltimore
City and certain members of his staff and increasing the number
of clerks, writ clerks and deputies.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37 (x) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1964 Replacement Volume), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensa-
tion and Duties", be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with
amendments, to read as follows:

37.

(x) In Baltimore City, the Sheriff shall receive an annual salary of
[$11,500.00] $16,000.00. He shall appoint an under-sheriff and chief
deputy at an annual salary of [$8,450] $10,000, one writ clerk and
