f. 326; 1. EI #9, f. 211). Young died of gout, 8 Feb. 1754. Steuart was
actually an assistant, transacting the business of the office for a third of
the profits (AM, VI, 36; Portfolio II, folder 4, no. 75).
5. *Dr. George Steuart remained sole Judge from Young's death until
the appointment of Calvert; he took all profits during this year (AM, VI,
277).
6. *Dr. George Steuart and *Benedict Calvert of Prince George's County
(Prot. natural son of Charles, Lord Baltimore) com. jointly, 5 March 1755
and again 29 April 1773 (Prov. Ct. Rec., 1. EI #9, pt a, f. 571; Commission
Book No. 82, f. 301). Steuart returned to Scotland in 1775 and there died
in 1799; Calvert surrendered the office to St. George Peale, Register of the
Land Office of the Western Shore, 13 May 1777 (AM, XVI, 250). He died 9 Jan.
1788.
2b. Clerk or Register of the Land Office.
This clerk was appointed by the Agent and Receiver General from 1683 to
1717 and thereafter by the Judge or Judges of the Land Office. The Constitu-
tion of 1776 provided for two Registers, one for each shore, to be appointed
by the Governor.
