in writing, the duration or time of such labour, the rate thereof
by the day or the month, (as the case may be,) by whom, and for
whose account the same was rendered, and the whole, amount or
value thereof, to be received in taxes by the collector or collectors
of his county in discharge of monies due or owing for this parti-
cular tax.

CHAP. 110.

2. And be it enacted, That the levy courts of Charles and St.
Mary's counties, or a majority of them, shall at every annual
meeting for the regulation of the conduct of the supervisors, fix
and establish proper and reasonable rates or prices tor the hire of
labourers, horses, carts, wagons, or other carriages, to be work-
ed or used on the, roads of Charles and St. Mary's counties, and
shall publish the same in every hundred of said counties.

3. And be it enacted, That the levy court, or a majority of them,
at every such meeting, shall make out separate and distinct lists
of all taxable persons in each hundred within the county, to-
gether with the amounts of their respective road taxes, and shall
furnish the collector of the county with copies thereof within ten
days after their said meeting, and the said collector shall leave
with every taxable person in the hundreds an account of his said
road tax, within sixty days thereafter, under the penalty of sixty
cents for every such omission.

4. And be it enacted, That the levy courts, or a majority of them,
are hereby required, every year hereafter, to nominate, and by
warrant, under the hand of the clerk, and seal of the county, ap-
point fit and proper persons to be supervisors of the public roads
in said counties, within such divisions and districts as shall be
specified and assigned by said courts in the said warrants; and
every supervisor appointed in virtue of this act, shall give bond
to the state, of Maryland, with such security as shall be approved
of by said levy courts, for the performance of his duty, and
such supervisors, so appointed, shall continue to serve as such
until a new appointment be made as aforesaid by the said levy
courts, and in case of the death, removal, neglect, refusal to act,
or misbehaviour, of any supervisor so appointed, the said levy
courts, or a majority of them, in the recess of said courts,
may nominate and appoint, by warrant under their hands and
seals, another person in his place, to serve for the residue of the
time, for which said supervisor so dying, removing, refusing to
act, or misbehaving, was originally appointed, and the supervi-
sors nominated and appointed as aforesaid, shall give bond and
security as aforesaid, and shall clear, amend, and keep in good
repair, all such roads, bridges and causeways, as are needful and

requisite to be made and repaired; Provided, that nothing in this
act shall be construed to extend to framed or arched bridges ex-
ceeding fifteen feet in length, or to affect cases where persons are
or may hereafter be obliged, either by law or contract, to keep
bridges in repair; and to enable the said supervisors effectually
to perform the said duties, they are hereby empowered, from time
to time, to hire and employ, at reasonable wages, not exceeding
such wages as shall be fixed and established under the regulations
before recited, a sufficient number of labourers to work on the
said public roads, and to hire and employ horses, carts, wagons,
or other convenient carriages, for the purpose of carrying earth,
