LAWS OF MARYLAND .

Grammar and High Schools; Grammar and High
Schools, both male and female, may be establish-
ed by the board of School Commissioners, when-
ever the same may be considered necessary.

Schools to be
alike the prop-
erty of all.

SEC. 13. And be it enacted, That the privileges
of the schools of each grade, shall be alike the
property of all citizens of the said county, and
no special favor shall be granted to any person
on any account whatsoever.

ARTICLE III.

STUDIES OF THE DIFFERENT GRADES OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

dies.

SEC. 14. And be it enacted, That the board of
School Commissioners shall see that there shall be
taught in the Primary Schools, orthography,
reading, writing, English grammar, geography
and arithmetic, and such other branches as the
said board of School Commissioners may require.
SEC. 15. And be it enacted, That the following
shall be the course of studies in the Grammar
Schools, viz: orthography, etymology, reading,
writing, composition, English grammar, geog-
raphy, history, natural philosophy, arithmetic, al-
gebra, and also, if deemed advisable by the said
board, geometry, mensuration, book-keeping,
surveying and chemistry.
SEC. 16. And be it enacted, That the course
of studies in the High Schools, shall be such as
the said board of School Commissioners may de-
termine.

ARTICLE IV.

OF TERMS OF TUITION.

Not more than
one dollar to be
charged for a
term of twelve
weeks.

SEC. 17. And be it enacted, That the terms of
tuition of the Primary, Grammar and High
Schools, shall be furnished at the rate of not
more than one dollar per term of twelve weeks,
or free of charge to each and every scholar, in
the discretion of the board; the costs for which,
over and above the amount received for tuition
fees, as hereinbefore provided, as well as all neces-
sary expenses connected with said schools, shall
be obtained by a levy upon the assessable pro-
perty of the said county, as hereinafter provided,
