Joint Resolution naming the Annapolis-Washington Free-
way the "John Hanson Highway".
WHEREAS, The Annapolis-Washington Freeway is now
being constructed through the heart of Southern Maryland;
and
WHEREAS, It would be highly appropriate for such free-
way to be named as a memorial for one of Southern Mary-
land's most illustrious patriots; and
WHEREAS, John Hanson of Oxon Hill, Southern Mary-
land's great colonial patriot rendered immeasurable service
to the colony of Maryland in the troubled revolutionary
days and to his country both as President of the Continental
Congress and as a leader in recruiting and equipping the
first troops from the South for George Washington's army
and in other ways organizing contributions of money, arms
and munitions for the colonial armies; and
WHEREAS, No suitable memorial now exists within the
State of Maryland to a great patriot who served his country
as virtually its first president; now therefore be it
Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
in reverence and in gratitude to him from the State he so
nobly served, the Annapolis-Washington Freeway be named
"John Hanson Highway"; and be it further
Resolved, That the Secretary of State send copies, under
