CHAPTER 186.

Passed Feb.
28, 1844.

An act authorizing Eleanor R. Contee, guardian to Benja-
min Contee, to bring into this State, from Virginia, cer-
tain Negro Slaves for life, the property of her ward, the
said Benjamin Contee.

Authorised to

into this state.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That Eleanor R. Contee, guardian of Benja-
min Contee, be, and she is hereby authorized and permit-
ted to bring into this State, from the State of Virginia,
any slave or slaves being slaves for life, belonging to her
said ward, and confided to her as guardian, and the same
to hire out and work from time to lime, for the benefit of
her said ward, and to pay over to her said ward the same
when he shall have arrived at age, or otherwise dispose of
according to the law relative to guardians and wards; pro-

vided, that the said slave or slaves be not brought in this
State for sale, or be sold by said guardian, and provided
further, that said guardian or her agent, shall within thir-
ty days after the removal of said slaves into this State,
make out and file in the clerks office of the county to
which said slave or slaves may be at the time removed to
under this act, a list of said slave or slaves, specifying
their names and ages as near as practicable.

Not entitled to
freedom.

Sec. 2. And be it enacted, That no slave or slaves
brought in this State under or by virtue of this act, shall
be entitled to freedom, any law to the contrary notwith-
standing.

 

CHAPTER 186.

An act relating to the issuing of Warrants and Precepts by
Justices of the Peace in and for Washington county.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That from and after the passage of this act, all
warrants or precepts, issued by justices of the peace in
and for Washington county, for the recovery of small
debts in said county, shall be made returnable to, or
