Funds of said County a sum not in excess of Twelve
Thousand Dollars ($12, 000) for the purpose of building
an adequate road from the Dulaney Valley Road to the
gates of the historic site of "Hampton".
WHEREAS, "Hampton", the famous home of the Ridgely
family for more than one hundred and fifty years, has been
presented by the Avalon Foundation to the nation as a
National Historic Site for operation as an historic site and
museum under the custody and management of the Society
for the Preservation of Maryland Antiquities; and
WHEREAS, the main house on "Hampton" is the largest
authentic Georgian residence now in existence in the United
States and its restoration and the development and restora-
tion of the famous gardens and grounds of "Hampton" will
exhaust all available funds; and
WHEREAS, it is essential to the development and mainte-
nance of "Hampton" as a National Historic Site that there
be an adequate road to the gates of "Hampton" so that the
many visitors from all over the United States who are ex-
pected to visit this famous historical site may be enabled
to drive to it; and
WHEREAS, it is for the benefit and advantage of Baltimore
County and its people, both culturally and financially, that
such an historic site be properly and fittingly maintained
within its borders; therefore
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That the County Commissioners of Baltimore County
be and they are hereby authorized and empowered to ex-
pend from the General Funds of the County the sum of
Twelve Thousand Dollars ($12, 000), or so much thereof as
may be necessary to build an adequate road from the Dulaney
Valley Road east to the gates of "Hampton".
SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take
effect June 1, 1949.
