Supplement), title "Clerks of Courts," sub-title "General
Duties of Clerks," relating to the compensation of the clerks
of the circuit courts in the several counties of this State.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assem-bly of Mary-
land, That Section 19 of Article 17 of the Annotated Code of
Maryland (1947 Supplement), title "Clerks of Courts," sub-
title "General Duties of Clerks/7 be and it is hereby repealed
and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:
19. (a). The Clerk of the Criminal Court of Baltimore
City and of each of the Law and Equity Courts of Baltimore
City, and the Clerks of the Circuit Courts of Calvert, Fred-
erick AND Montgomery

Counties, shall be
entitled to receive annually a salary of not less than Three
Thousand Six Hundred Dollars ($3,600.00) or more than Seven
Thousand Five Hundred Dollars ($7,500.00), to be fixed and
determined in the case of each clerkship by the Board of Public
Works, and each Clerk shall be entitled to the salary so fixed
and no more.
(b). The Board of Public Works, in fixing the annual
salaries of each of the said Clerks of Baltimore City, and of the
Clerks of the Circuit Courts of Calvert, Frederick AND Mont-
gomery

Counties, shall be guided in the
exercise of its discretion in regard thereto by the dollar volume
of the total fees collected and of excess fees turned over to the
State for each of the preceding five (5) years by the Clerk's
office for which the salary is being fixed, and the number of
cases instituted and tried in the Court for which the salary is
being fixed, by the volume of docket entries and recordings
transcribed by the office and by any other pertinent and rela-
tive data, for which the salary is being fixed, bearing on the
reasonableness of the salary in relation to the work done and
volume handled by the office, it being the intent of this section
that each clerk shall receive fair and adequate compensation
for the effort and duties required by his office, and volume and
character of work done by him as Clerk, in proportion to the
salaries fixed by the Legislature for the Clerks of the Circuit
Courts of the several counties.
(c) The Clerks of the Circuit Courts of the several counties
of the State, shall be entitled to receive respectively, the an-
nual salaries hereinafter set forth and no more, as follows:

entitled to receive the annual salary of $3,500.]
