Records

Had it not been for the fact that the Register of Wills and the Clerk of the Court were
housed in a vaultlike wing all of their records would have been lost in the fire of February 19,
1858. The main building was totally destroyed and with it the records of the County Com-
missioners and the earlier administrative bodies.

There are losses in the court records which must have occurred before the fire, some no
doubt during the earliest days of the county, perhaps during the long period of peregrination
by the court before the building of the first courthouse—1773-1791. Unfortunately, the early
court proceedings which have survived are extraordinarily lacking in detail.
