WASHINGTON MONUMENT.
Monuments.—The public spirit and frratitude of our City is
displayed in those splendid memorials which she has erected in
honor of the glorious dead. There are three Monuments in Bal-
timore which owe their origin to public munificence, and on this
foundation rests our claim to the title of the "Monumental City;"
an enviable distinction. See Armistead, Battle and Washington
Monuments.
Odd Fellows' Hall.—A very handsome and appropriate build-
ing, in North Gay street, near the Shot Tower. See chap. x.
Penitentiary.—The Maryland Penitentiary is in the immediate
vicinity of the county jail, and on the same square of ground.
It is of brick; the main building being square, and having two
wings of extensive dimensions. Exclusive of these, there are a
number of work shops for the different trades. The wall which
