judges; if the same shall be found on the poll books by the
clerk he shall again announce his political affiliation and
the judges shall deposit his ballot in the box of the party to
which the voter states he belongs; this, however, must agree
with his first declaration, which shall be noted by the poll
clerks when the official ballot is first obtained; after the
ballot has been received and deposited in the proper ballot
box as aforesaid, the clerk shall note the fact by marking the

letter "V" after the said voter's name; voters shall be
entitled to additional tickets to the number of two upon the
surrender of the original, the same to be given one at a time
and only in case the preceding one shows that it was not
intentionally mutilated.
SEC. 16. And be it enacted, That where groups of candi-
dates are to be voted for the ticket shall plainly indicate the

number to be chosen; in case more than the required num-
ber is voted for it shall not vitiate the portions of the ticket
which are correctly marked; in case delegates are to be
chosen the ticket shall clearly indicate the number; no
official sample ballots shall be necessary; the voters may
obtain assistance either by the aid of unofficial sample
ballots or in any other way or manner that they may elect.
SEC. 17. And be it enacted, That as soon as the polls are
closed the judges and clerks shall immediately proceed to

canvass the votes cast; the work shall not be adjourned or
postponed until it shall have been fully completed; in
counting the ballots the intent of the voters shall always
govern; provided, the same can be intelligently obtained.
The judges shall complete the work of counting the
ballots of one party first, then cast up the returns, sign-
ing the same as hereinafter provided, before the ballot-
box of the other political party shall be opened, which shall
then be completed in a like manner; two tally sheets of
each political party shall be kept, the same to be authenti-
cated by the signatures of the judges and clerks; one of
each of said tally sheets, together with a summary of
returns, also authenticated by the signatures of judges and
clerks of election, shall be immediately sent by registered
mail to the supervisors of election at their office in Bel Air,
Maryland. It shall be the duty of the judges of opposite
political faith to that of the return judge to see that the
tallies and statements are mailed as aforesaid. The other
