36 TWENTY-SEVENTH ANNUAL REPORT

It will be noted that a number of the church records received
contain vital records dating in the 1890's and early 1900's. The fact
that official vital statistics were poorly kept during this period adds
greatly to the potential usefulness of these records, since they may be
the only means by which a person who is filing a claim for social
security benefits can prove his elate of birth.
