Mr. Thomas was a guest speaker before the Augustine Herman Czech-
American Historical Society at the dedication of Augustine Herman High-
way at Chesapeake City, Cecil County, on July 29, 1956.
Mr. Beach and Mr. Skordas attended the initial meeting of the Maryland
Clerks of Court Association at Baltimore City Courthouse, November 16,
1956.
Mr. Wilds addressed the Sixth Annual Convention of the State Associa-
tion of County Commissioners at Ocean City on July 14, 1956; and Mr. Beach
spoke to the Maryland Public Finance Officers Association on our Records
Management program at Easton on May 17, 1957.
Mr. Skordas attended the annual meeting of the National Microfilm
Association at Rochester, New York, April 1-3, 1957.
The Maryland Library Association's Committee on Listing of Maryland
State Documents, whose chairman is Elizabeth C. Litsinger, Head, Maryland
Department, Enoch Pratt Free Library, met with the Archivist, January 24,
1957. to formulate plans for a better system of making State publications
known to local libraries. As its part in the arrangment agreed upon, the Hall
of Records prepares and sends to the chairman of the committee a monthly
list of State and county publications deposited here by virtue of Chapter 651
of the Acts of 1947.
On March 21, 1957, the Archivist was made an honorary member of the
Advisory Board of the Bureau of Public Records Collection and Research of
the University of North Carolina.
The State Archivists of Georgia, Louisiana and Washington submitted to
the Archivist for appraisal copies of archival laws proposed for enactment in
their respective legislatures. After careful study of the proposed laws, the
Archivist prepared detailed commentary and recommendations on each of
them.
TEACHING AND LEARNING
The Archivist has continued in his effort to have inaugurated an Institute
of Maryland Studies to be administered by the University of Maryland in co-
operation with other private and public institutions. During fiscal year 1957,
administrative details were considered with Dr. Wilson H. Elkins, President
of the University, and Professor Wesley M. Gewehr, Chairman of the Depart-
ment of History.
In fiscal year 1957, the Archivist lectured to four classes of The Ameri-
