Through the courtesy of Mrs. Mary Dent Slye, we were permitted to
make a microfilm copy of survey notes made by her grandfather, George
Bennett Dent, who was the County Surveyor of St. Mary's County for
several decades in the latter part of the nineteenth century. It is obvious
from their condition that these valuable notes have been consulted frequently.
It is anticipated that the microfilm copies placed in our stacks and in the
St. Mary's County Library at Leonardtown will reduce the wear and tear
on the originals. It is our hope that ultimately the originals will also find
their way to State ownership. In the meanwhile, the microfilm record will
prove invaluable.

One other acquisition should be mentioned. After long search we have
given up hope of ever finding the Maryland Charter. The oldest manuscript
copy extant seems to be one of 1734, now in the Library of the House of
Lords in London. A microfilm copy was purchased and several projection
prints have been made from the film copy.
