with Thomas Harwood of Richard, Collector of the Revenue, by
Jeremiah T. Chase of Annapolis, October 18, 1798, printed form
with handwritten entries. 1 sheet. October 27, 1950.

WALTER R. BENJAMIN, Autographs, (1) Proclamation of Gov. Horatio
Sharpe proroguing the General Assembly from May 16 to May 24,
1768, dated April 6, 1768, and signed by Sharpe and Upton Scott,
Clerk of the Council, broadside, 1 sheet. (2) Account of George
Mann for a public entertainment held in Annapolis to celebrate the
birth of the Dauphin of France on June 25, 1782, dated December
25, 1783, 1 sheet. January 4, 1951.

LIBRARY

With rare exceptions the Hall of Records limits its library acquisitions
to printed materials having to do with Maryland and with archival tech'
niques. Most of the new materials in the second category are received by
us on an exchange basis. The obvious advantage here is that such mate'
rials cost us little or nothing; the disadvantage is that we are not able to
exercise much choice. This will account for the large number of foreign
archival publications that have little value for us except that they do give
the staff an opportunity to study methods of archival work used elsewhere.

In our search for Maryland records which have been scattered in the
course of time, we find it necessary to purchase catalogues and lists of
holdings of other institutions. An excellent example of this kind of useful
work is the Guide to the Microfilm Collection of Early State Records
prepared by the Library of Congress and the University of North Carolina.
In this Guide we have found all the Maryland legislative journals which
we were lacking. I should note here that the list of new materials given
below does not contain microfilm. This is so because we have not yet
