on the Baltimore and Frederick turnpike. His will

mentions his wife Sarah, two married daughters, Sally

Ann Jeffries and Sarah Towser; three single daughters,
Uargaret, ivlary and Rebecca, and four sons, Leonard,

Jacob, Samuel and Joseph.57 He apparently was & lower

of books and reading, for he was listed among the sub-

scribers to the only two books known to include sub-
scribers names printed in Baltimore during the period
1791-180058, and he was among the first members of
the Library Company of Baltimore.59

Pow details are available concerning the further
career of Llatthcw Er own, or of the "repose for some
time and a business requiring moderate exercise"60
which he hoped to secure after his retirement from
newspaper work. On January 17, 1799, he had married
Elizabeth Prick, daughter of Peter Prick of Baltimore,61

and presumably loft Baltimore with his family about
1807, since his name disappears from the city directory
after that date. He moved to Frederick County, where
he engaged in sheep raising and farming on his estate
"Fleecy Dale", and occasionally wrote for the Fred-
