Evans assigns the date 1796,
Maryland historical society dates this "1800?"
because of the reference on page vi to the "acros-
tic on the late President." "Late President",
however, could, and probably does, refer to Wash-
ington's having lately held the office of President
The dedication, "To His Excellency George Washing-
ton," and the acrostic itself seem to have been
