Written against a pamphlet by James Rumsey, of Shepherd's Town, Berkley County, Virginia in which .Cruse was
accused of having stolen and used the methods of steam engine construction invented by Rumsey. Cruse claimed that the
ideas incorporated in his steam engine were not invented by Rumsey but had been used several years before. He also stated
that his engine was used for pumping water while Rumsey's was designed for water transportation. Appended is a certificate
signed by some of Baltimore's leading citizens including O. H. Williams, W. Smith, Richard Curson and others, stating
that they had "... seen the model of a Steam-Engine erected by Mr. Cruse, upon a small scale, actually at work, and throw-
ing up a considerable quantity of water in a minute ..." and that they thought him deserving of a patent James Rumsey
had already received a patent from the Maryland legislature granting him the sole right of making and selling steam boats
in the state.

A defense of Captain Andrew Bryson who had sued the company, Yates and Petty, to recover a debt. The court recog-
nized Bryson's full claim but Petty refused to pay, claiming that the suit was won by perjury. Petty tried to getan indict*
ment from the Grand Jury against Bryson but the case was rejected.
