powder Hundred, Baltimore County. MARRIED by
June 6, 1693, Sarah (?-ca. 1710). CHILDREN. SONS:
Samuel, who married first, in 1713, Ruth Connell
(Camell), and second, in 1716, Katern Herring-
ton; Sutton (?-1765), who married first, by 1717,
Constant (last name unknown), and second, in
1762, Prudence Hinton. DAUGHTERS: Hannah;
probably Elizabeth, who married in 1705 John
Brown. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate.
RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION. Anglican; St. John's
Parish, Baltimore County. SOCIAL STATUS AND
ACTIVITIES: Mr., by 1699; Gent., by 1703. Prob-
ably either seriously ill or out of Maryland be-
tween late 1706 and at least November 1709. In
October 1706, he gave his wife power of attorney
to sell his property in order to pay his debts and
to provide for their children, and she acted in that
capacity until at least November 1709. OCCUPA-
TION AL PROFILE: planter; called himself merchant
in 1698. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE:
Lower House, Baltimore County, 1701-1704

DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: ca.
1,080 acres in Baltimore County (all by purchase
or patent). SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN LAND BE-
TWEEN FIRST ELECTION AND DEATH: Sold Or mort-
gaged 720 acres, 1702-1703, but retrieved own-
ership of at least 158 acres in 1703, and probably
of an additional 300 acres by 1709, when Sarah
sold 200 acres of that tract in his name; obtained
warrants and certificates of survey for 2,000 acres
in Baltimore County in 1705; executed a deed of
gift to his children for three plantations totaling
676 acres, in 1711. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: prob-
ably by March 1713/14, definitely by 1719. There
was no probate of his estate in Maryland.

Catherine's maternal grandfather was Thomas
Addison (1679-1727). Her uncle was John Addi-
son (1713-1764). Her brothers were John (1729-
died in infancy); Addison Murdock (1731-1793);
and John (1733-1790), who married Ann Belt.
Her sisters were Ann; Mary (?-1795); and Eleanor
(?-1796), who married Benjamin Hall, of Francis
(?-1803). Her half sisters were Rebecca (?-1826);
Margaret (1761-1828). Her niece was Anne Hall
(1762-1809), who married Thomas Clark (ca. 1760-
17%). MARRIED second, ca. 1775, Lettice (?-1776),
widow of both James Wardrop (?-1760), a mer-
chant of Upper Marlborough, Prince George's
County, and Dr. Adam Thomson (?-1767) of
Upper Marlborough, Prince George's County,
both of whom executed their wills in New York
City. Lettice was the daughter of Philip Lee (ca.
1681-1744) and Elizabeth Lawson Sewell. Her
brothers were Corbin Lee (?-1774); John; George
Lee (1736-1807); and Hancock (?-1807). Her half
brothers were Henry Sewell (?-1780); Nicholas
Lewis Sewell (ca. 1721-1800); Thomas Lee (?-
1749); Francis Lee (?-1749); Philip Lee (?-1739);
Arthur Lee (?-1760); and Richard Lee (ca. 1707-
1787). Her sisters were Elizabeth; Alice; Mar-
garet; and Hannah (ca. 1736-by 1781), who mar-
ried second, Joseph Sprigg (1736-1800). Her half
sisters were Ann Lee (ca. 1711-1800); Eleanor
Lee (1710-1759); and Sarah Lee. Her nieces were
Barbara Bowie (1756-1805), who married sec-
ond, Ignatius Taylor (?-1807); Margaret Lee Clark
