(qualified on November 8, 1779), 1780-1781 (re-
signed on January 2, 1781). OTHER STATE OF-
FICES: associate justice, 5th Judicial District (com-
posed of Frederick, Washington, and Allegany
counties), appointed 1790; first U.S. tax com-
missioner for the State of Maryland, 1798. LOCAL
OFFICES: justice, Frederick County, appointed
1773, 1777-1780, 1782-1788; Committee of Ob-
servation, Frederick County, elected 1776; jus-
tice, Orphans' Court, Frederick County, ap-
pointed December 22, 1777-1780, 1782-1788,
1790-1793; member of a special court that tried
and sentenced Tories, July 25, 1781; commis-
sioner of the tax, Frederick County, appointed
January 8, 1782, January 2, 1783; judge, Court
of Appeals for Tax Assessment, Frederick County,
1786; All Saints' Parish Vestry, Frederick County,
n.d. MILITARY SERVICE: rejected a field commis-
sion as a colonel of the Linganore Battalion on
January 1, 1777, stating that he had been elected
to serve as a delegate to the Lower House and
the Constitution precluded his doing both. OUT
OF STATE SERVICE representative, U.S. Con-
gress, 1791-1793. STANDS ON PUBLIC/PRIVATE IS-
SUES: provided in his will for the manumission of
his slaves, and requested that they be well treated
by his heirs. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. PERSONAL
PROPERTY, assessed value £939.15.0, including 23
slaves and 21 oz. plate, 1782; 25 slaves, 1790.
LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: 782 acres in Frederick
County (at least 343 acres through marriage). SIG-
NIFICANT CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELEC-
TION AND DEATH, resurveyed and combined sev-
eral tracts, adding on a vacancy of 41 acres, to
make a 551-acre tract, 1787; resurveyed a 271-
acre patent in order to correct boundary discrep-
ancies, with a net loss of 47 acres, 1793; patented
7 acres, 1795; acquired probably through pur-
chase 2()6 acres, ca. 1798. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED:
on January 14, 1800, at "Mid-Hill," Frederick
County, of yellow fever. PERSONAL PROPERTY:
TEV, at least $9,532.13 current money (including
33 slaves, 52 oz. plate, 54 books, plus parcels of
law books, proceedings, and dockets, and many
magazines). LAND: at least 982 acres in Frederick
County, plus a small farm of unspecified acreage.
His will mentioned 2 lots in Liberty Town, Fred-
erick County.

SHERWOOD, DANIEL (ca. 1669-1738). BORN:
on March 20, ca. 1669, in Talbot County; eldest
son. NATIVE: second generation. RESIDED: near
Second Creek, Talbot County. FAMILY BACK-
GROUND. FATHER Hugh Sherwood (1632-1710/11).

MOTHER. Mary. BROTHERS: Philip (?-1717/18);
Hugh; Francis (?-1737); and John (ca. 1678-?).
SISTERS: Catherine; Margaret (?-1755). MARRIED
probably on December 26, 1689, Mary (ca. 1672-
1746), probably the daughter of Thomas Hopkins
and wife Elizabeth. CHILDREN. SONS. Daniel (1691-
1700); Hugh (1697-1735), who married Mary
Russell (?-1748); Thomas (1699-1723); and Daniel
(1709-1767), who married in 1745/46 Elizabeth
Rice. DAUGHTERS: Mary (ca. 1693-1702); Eliz-
abeth (1695-?), who married (first name un-
known) Tembt; Margaret (ca. 1701-?); Mary
(1704-1795), who married John Auld (?-1766);
Catharine (ca. 1705-?), who married (first name
unknown) Skinner; Lucey; Frances (ca. 1707-?);
and Dorothy (1714-?), who married (first name
unknown) Elliott. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION:
literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Anglican, St.
Michael's Parish, Talbot County. SOCIAL STATUS
AND ACTIVITIES: Mr., by 1703; Gent., by 1704.
OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE, attorney, admitted to
Talbot County Court November 1696, disbarred
for nonattendance June 1698; merchant by 1699;
planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE:
Lower House, Talbot County, 1722-1724 (Elec-
tions 1, Laws 1-3). Involved in a disputed elec-
tion in 1725 and was not returned. LOCAL OF-
FICES: sheriff, Talbot County, 1707-1709,
dismissed because of irregularities in election pro-
cedures; justice, Talbot County, 1720-1733 (quo-
rum 1727-1732); St. Michael's Parish Vestry,
Talbot County, 1735-1738. WEALTH DURING LIFE-
TIME. PERSONAL PROPERTY: purchased a servant
with seven years to serve who had been trans-
ported to America for involvement in the Jacob-
ite rebellion, 1716. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION:
probably ca. 1,390 acres in Talbot and Dorchester
counties (at least 80 acres in Talbot County in-
herited from his father, ca. 700 acres in Talbot
and Dorchester counties by purchase). SIGNIFI-
CANT CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELEC-
TION AND DEATH: resurveyed 4 Talbot County
tracts into 1 large tract with a net gain of ca. 70
acres, 1727; purchased 400 acres by 1734 and sold
412 acres in 1737, all in Dorchester County; sold
80 acres in Talbot County, 1737. WEALTH AT DEATH.
DIED: will probated on November 18, 1738, in
Talbot County. PERSONAL PROPERTY: TEV,
£541.11.3 current money (including 7 slaves, old
books valued at 17 shillings, and 1 eight-year-old
stallion valued at £12.0.0); FB, £174.9.11. LAND.
ca. 1,370 acres in Talbot and Dorchester counties.
