MEE, GEORGE (?-1662). IMMIGRATED, by 1651
as a free adult with his wife and stepson from
Virginia. RESIDED: in St. Michael's Hundred, St.
Mary's County. MARRIED Catherine (1601-?),
probably the widow of Oliver Vanhack (1600-by
1645). CHILDREN. STEPSON: John Vanhack (?-ca.
1675), who married Sarah (?-by 1679), daughter
of Thomas Mowell (?-1675). PRIVATE CAREER. ED-
UCATION: illiterate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION:
Protestant. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: ar-
rived with seven servants; called Mr., on arrival;
no record of officeholding other than one term

INGS), JOHN (ca. 1674-1734). BORN: ca. 1674.
NATIVE: probably; if so, second generation. RE-
SIDED: in Dorchester County. FAMILY BACK-
GROUND. FATHER: Richard Meekins (ca. 1642-ca.
1710) of Dorchester County, who was illiterate.
MOTHER OR STEPMOTHER: Mary Staplefort.
BROTHER: Richard (?-1718), who married Sarah.
MARRIED first, by 1710, Hagar, daughter of Wil-
liam Robson of Dorchester County. Her brothers
were William, Jr. (?-ca. 1728), who married Jane,
daughter of John Pollard (?-1702); John (?-1726),
who married Elizabeth; Charles; and Joseph. Her
sisters were Jane, who married Tobias Pollard (ca.
1669-1749); Elizabeth, who married first, Walter
Campbell (1665-1738), and second, ca. 1745,
William Jones, Gent., of Somerset County. Her
niece was Margaret Pollard (?-by 1729), who
married John Edmondson (1692-1743). MARRIED
second, by 1733, Mary. CHILDREN. SONS. Isaac,
who married Ann; John; Joseph, who married
Elizabeth; James (?-1734), probably never mar-
ried; and Thomas, probably died young. DAUGH-
TERS: Hagar; Mary, who married (first name un-

County (389 acres by deed of gift from father;
100 acres through first marriage; 50 acres by pat-
ent). SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN

FIRST ELECTION AND DEATH: purchased 227 acres
in Dorchester County between 1719 and 1720;
conveyed by deed of gift 666 acres in Dorchester

MEERES (MEARES), THOMAS (ca. 1602-1674).
BORN: ca. 1602, probably in England. IMMI-
GRATED: in 1649 as a free adult from Lower Nor-
folk County, Virginia. RESIDED: in Lower Nor-
folk County, Virginia, by 1637-1649; Broad Neck
Hundred, Anne Arundel County, 1649-death.
MARRIED first, Sarah Reinolds. MARRIED second,
Margaret. MARRIED third, Elizabeth Freeman.
CHILDREN. SONS: John (?-by 1675), who married
Sarah, daughter of Philip Thomas (?-1675); Wil-
liam, who married in 1679 Elizabeth Webb; and
Thomas. DAUGHTER: Sarah, who married first,
John Homewood (?-1682), and second, John
Bennett. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate.
RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Protestant. Meeres was
charged by the Lower Norfolk County Court on
August 15, 1649, with not attending the Anglican
Church and refusing to hear common prayer. He
was one of the religious dissenters who emigrated
to Providence, later Anne Arundel County, in
December 1649. Meeres became a Quaker by
1658. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: planter, mer-
chant. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE:

Parliamentary Commission, 1655-1657/58; Lower
House, Anne Arundel County, 1663-1664. LO-
