BIOGRAPHIES LOW

cluding 68 slaves and 3 servants); FB, £6,238.19.1.
LAND: 11,138 acres in Cecil, Kent, Prince George's,
St. Mary's, Baltimore, and Charles counties, plus
a tract in the Tuckahoe Creek area of the Eastern
Shore and one in Kent County, Delaware.

LOWE, HENRY (?-1721). BORN: probably in St.
Mary's County; eldest son. NATIVE: second gen-
eration. RESIDED: in Kent County. FAMILY BACK-
GROUND. FATHER: Henry Lowe (?-1717). MOTHER:
Susannah Maria (1666-1714), daughter of Rich-
ard Bennett (ca. 1639-1667), widow of John Dor-
nall (?-1684). UNCLES: John Lowe (1642-?); Jas-
per Lowe; Nicholas Lowe (ca. 1662-1714); and
Richard Bennett (1667-1749), who married Eliz-
abeth Rousby (1682-1740), daughter of John
Rousby (?-1685/86). HALF UNCLES: Edward Lloyd
(1670-1718/19); Philemon Lloyd (ca. 1674-1732/
33); and James Lloyd (1679/80-1723). AUNTS:
Elizabeth Lowe; Jane Lowe; and Dorothy Lowe.
HALF AUNTS: Henrietta Maria Lloyd (1673/1702);
Anne Lloyd (1677-1748), who married Richard
Tilghman (1672/73-1738/39); Mary Lloyd (1680-

married third, Thomas Bozman (ca. 1693-1752).
NEPHEW: Benjamin Hall, of Francis (?-1803).
MARRIED possibly Mary. CHILDREN. Probably died
without progeny. PRIVATE CAREER. RELIGIOUS AF-
FILIATION: Anglican, Shrewsbury Parish, Kent
County. His mother and sisters were Catholics.
SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: Esq., at death.
Lowe was a member of a prominent family that
strongly supported the proprietor. OCCUPA-
TIONAL PROFILE: probably planter. PUBLIC CA-
REER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Upper House, 1717-

1718 (appointed during the 2nd session of the
1716-1718 Assembly), 1719-1721 (died before
the 5th session of the 1719-1721/22 Assembly).
OTHER PROVINCIAL OFFICES: agent and receiver
general, 1716/17-1721; Council, 1717-1721
(qualified on May 29, 1717). LOCAL OFFICES: jus-
tice, Kent County, in office March 1715/16-March
1716/17; Shrewsbury Parish Vestry, Kent County,
elected 1716 and 1720. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME.

LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: ca. 1,792 acres in Kent
County (inherited from father). WEALTH AT DEATH.
DIED: by October 4, 1721, in Kent County. PER-

LOWE, JOHN (?-1701). IMMIGRATED: by 1686/
87 as a free adult. RESIDED: in St. Mary's County.
MARRIED Rebecca, widow of (first name un-
known) Wright. She subsequently married Thomas
Mudd. CHILDREN. SON. John, who married Mary,
widow of (first name unknown) Holmes, daugh-
ter of Henry Hawkins (?-1699). DAUGHTERS: Re-
becca; Elinor; Elizabeth; and Alice. PRIVATE CA-
REER. EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS

AFFILIATION: Anglican. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE.

House, St. Mary's County, 1697 (elected to the
8th session of the 1694-1697 Assembly), 1697/
98-1700 (Elections 4; Aggrievances 4), 1701 (died
before the 2nd session of the 1701-1704 Assem-
bly). LOCAL OFFICE: justice, St. Mary's County,
1694-1701 (quorum, 1694-1701). MILITARY
SERVICE, major, by 1698-1701. WEALTH DURING

LIFETIME. PERSONAL PROPERTY: 3 ships and 1

shallop, 1698. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: will pro-
bated July 15, 1701. PERSONAL PROPERTY: TEV,

LOWE, NICHOLAS (ca. 1662-1714). BORN. ca.
1662, in Derbyshire, England; younger son. IM-
MIGRATED: ca. 1674 as a minor, probably with
his older brother. RESIDED: in Calvert County;
moved to Talbot County by 1686. FAMILY BACK-
GROUND. FATHER: probably John Lowe (1616-?).
MOTHER: probably Katherine, daughter of Sir Ar-
thur Pilkington of Stanley, Yorkshire. UNCLE:
Vincent Lowe (?-1692). AUNT: Jane Lowe (?-
1700/1), who married first, Henry Sewall (?-1665),
and second, Charles Calvert, 3rd Lord Baltimore
(1637-1714/15). BROTHERS: Henry Lowe (?-1717);
John (1642-?); and Jasper. SISTERS. Elizabeth;
Jane; and Dorothy. FIRST COUSINS: Nicholas Se-
