Vanderheyden (1690-1741), who married first,
James Frisby (1684-1719), second; Thomas Bord-
ley (ca. 1683-1726), and third, Edmund Jennings
(?-1756); Francina Vanderheyden, who married
second, Charles Hynson (1692-1748). HALF
BROTHER: William Harris ( 1704- 1748). HALF SIS-
TERS Jane; Mary; Elizabeth; and Sarah. FIRST
COUSINS: Ariana Margaret Frisby (1717-?), who
married William Harris (1704-1748); John Beale
Bosley (1726/27-1804). MARRIED first, by 1745
Mary, daughter of Rev. James Williamson, origi-
nally from Shrewsbury Parish, Kent County, later
moved to Calvert County. Her brother was Alex-
ander, a minister of Prince George's Parish, Fred-
erick County. MARRIED second, Hester, daughter
of Judge (first name unknown) Bailey, of Dela-
ware. CHILDREN. SONS: Joseph (?-died young);
William, who moved to Delaware; and James, who
married (first name unknown), daughter of James
Burke. DAUGHTERS: Elizabeth, who married (first
name unknown) Anderson; Margaret, who mar-
ried (first name unknown) Anderson; Augusta,
who married Thomas Carter; and Hester, who
married D. Ridgely, of Delaware. PRIVATE CA-
REER. EDUCATION: studied to become a clergyman.

RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Anglican. SOCIAL STA-
TUS AND ACTIVITIES: Gent., 1743. OCCUPATIONAL
PROFILE: officeholder; Anglican minister, ordained
1753. Made chaplain of Maryland by Lord
Baltimore, 1753. A scandal concerning alleged
forgery by Harris caused Governor Sharpe to re-
fuse him a permanent appointment to a parish.
Governor Eden finally gave Harris a permanent
parish in 1769. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SER-
VICE: Lower House, Kent County, 1745 (Laws),
1745/46-1748 (Laws Cv 1, 1-3, 4), 1749-1751
(Laws Cv-3). LOCAL OFFICES: clerk, Court of
Oyer and Terminer and Gaol Delivery, Kent
County, commissioned 1742; rector locus tenens ,
All Hallow's Parish, Worcester County, before
1760; probationer, Chester Parish, Kent County,
1767-1769; rector, Christ Church Parish, Kent
County, 1769-1773; rector, Chester Parish, Kent
County, 1773. OUT OF COLONY SERVICE: minister,
Accomac Parish, Eastern Shore, Virginia, before
1760; minister, Lewes, Delaware, ca. 1760.

WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST
ELECTION: 1,235 acres, plus 7 lots in Kent County
(legacy from his father). SIGNIFICANT CHANGES

IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELECTION AND DEATH:

purchased 987 acres in Cecil County, which he
mortgaged to Edward Lloyd (1711-1770) and later
forfeited; received ca. 1,164 acres in Kent County
in 1748 from the estate of his brother William,
which he mortgaged and then sold. WEALTH AT

DEATH. DIED: between March 18 and May 3, 1773;
buried at Christ Church, Kent Island, Queen An-
ne's County. LAND: 322 acres, plus 6.5 lots in
Kent County; possibly an insolvent debtor at
death.

HARRIS, THOMAS (?-1760). BORN: of age by
1737; probably younger son. NATIVE: at least sec-
ond generation. RESIDED: in St. Paul's Parish,
Queen Anne's County. FAMILY BACKGROUND.
FATHER: Edward Harris (?-1717), of Queen An-
ne's County; a planter. MOTHER: Elizabeth.
BROTHER: Edward (?-1740), died without prog-
eny, killed by Peter, one of his slaves. SISTERS:
Anne, who married (first name unknown) Vicars,
of Talbot County; Elizabeth, who married (first
name unknown) Millington; and (first name un-
known), who married George Bessicks. OTHER
KINSHIP: his godfather was Dr. Thomas Godman,
who according to the terms of Edward Harris's
will was to supervise Thomas's education. MAR-
RIED by 1742 Elizabeth (?-ca. 1760), daughter of
William Turbutt (1683/84-1739); niece of both
Foster Turbutt (1679-1720/21) and James Earle,
Jr. (ca. 1694-1739). Elizabeth Turbutt Harris sub-
sequently married Richard Keene, of Queen An-
ne's County. Her brother was Michael. Her sisters
were Anna Maria, who married Edward Tilghman
(1713-1786); Mary. Her first cousins were Sarah
Turbutt (1706-1773), who married Nicholas
Goldsborough (ca. 1689-1766); Anne Turbutt
(1715-1766), who married John Goldsborough
(1711-1778); Elizabeth Turbutt (ca. 1708-?), who
married Tench Francis (1701-1758); Mary Anne
Wright (?-1747), who married William Hopper
(1707-1772); Anne Wright (?-by 1754), who mar-
ried Edward Oldham (1709-1773); Michael Earle
(1722-1787); Richard Tilghman Earle ( 1728/29-
1788); Joseph Earle (1739-1777); Anna Maria
Earle (1725-1795), who married Thomas Ringgold
(1715-1772); and Henrietta Maria Earle (1730-
1767), who married William Hemsley (1736/37-
1812). CHILDREN. SONS: William (?-by 1795);
Thomas; and Edward Harris (ca. 1757-ca. 1837).
DAUGHTERS: Elizabeth, who married Dr. George
Garnett, Jr.; Sarah, who married Rev. Samuel
Keene; Margaret, who married Vachel Keene; and
Mary (ca. 1755-?), who married Thomas Hill
Airey, of Dorchester County. PRIVATE CAREER.
