1753. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT
FIRST ELECTION: 130 acres in Anne Arundel
County; 2 lots in Annapolis (acquired through his
marriage). WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED: on May 11,
1756, at his home in Annapolis. LAND: 130 acres
in Anne Arundel County and 2 lots in Annapolis.

HAMILTON, ANDREW (1676-1741). BORN: in
1676, probably in Scotland. IMMIGRATED: in
1709/10 as a free adult with his wife and children
from Virginia. RESIDED: in Kent County; moved
to Philadelphia in late 1715. ADDITIONAL COM-
MENTS: he was in Virginia by 1 700, where he prac-
ticed law; he bought a large plantation in Mary-
land in 1707, but did not migrate there until two
years later. MARRIED ca. 1707 Ann (?-1736),
widow of Joseph Preeson; daughter of Thomas
Browne (?-1705), a Quaker of Northampton
County, Virginia, and his wife Susannah Den-
wood. Her sisters were Elizabeth, who married
Thomas Preeson, and Mary, who married first,
Southy Littleton, and second, Hancock Custis.
CHILDREN. SONS: Andrew (1708-1747); James
(1710-1783), who became governor of Pennsylva-
nia. DAUGHTER: Margaret (1709-1760), who mar-
ried William Allen, a mayor of Philadelphia. PRI-
VATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate; possibly
attended St. Andrew's University in 1690, and
Glasgow University in 1694; attended Gray's Inn,
London, England, 1713/14. RELIGIOUS AFFILIA-
TION: Protestant; his wife was a Quaker. SOCIAL
STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: Gent, by 1713; went to
England in 1713 and again in 1725-1726 when he
represented the Penns in litigation against Sir Wil-
liam Keith; achieved fame for his design of the
Pennsylvania Statehouse in Philadelphia, now
known as Independence Hall. OCCUPATIONAL
PROFILE: attorney, admitted to the following
courts: Somerset County in 1703; Provincial Court
in 1712. Practiced in Accomack County and
Northampton County courts in Virginia from
1703 to 1712; practiced in Pennsylvania from
1715. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE:

Lower House, Kent County, 1715 (Laws). OUT OF
COLONY SERVICE: attorney general of Pennsylva-
nia, 1717-1723/24; Pennsylvania Council, 1721-

1727-1733 (speaker 1729-1733), 1734-1739
(speaker); Delaware Assembly, Kent County,
1727-1733; (speaker 1728-1733). 1734^1739
(speaker); judge of the Vice- Admiral ty Court,
Pennsylvania, 1737-1741. STANDS ON PUBLIC/PRI-
VATE ISSUES: defender of John Peter Zenger in the
celebrated trial concerning freedom of the press,

1735. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT

FIRST ELECTION: at least 885 acres (sold in 1717),
plus land in Virginia. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED:
on August 4, 1741, in Bush Hill, Pennsylvania.

TION: Anglican; one of the first trustees of St.
Thomas Parish, Baltimore County. SOCIAL STA-
TUS AND ACTIVITIES: Gent., 1729. OCCUPATIONAL

PROFILE: planter. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE
SERVICE: Lower House, Baltimore County, 1722-
1724, 1725-1727, 1728-1731 (Aggrievances 1-5),
1732-1734 (Aggrievances 1-Cv), 1734/35-1737
(Aggrievances 1, Cv, 2-4). LOCAL OFFICES: justice,
Baltimore County, by 1728-at least 1735 (quo-
rum, 1729-at least 1735); commissioner, Baltimore
County, appointed to purchase land upon which
Baltimore Town was to be built, 1729. MILITARY
SERVICE: colonel, 1734. WEALTH DURING LIFE-
TIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: first appeared in
Baltimore County in 1710 when he purchased with
Peter Bond (?-1718) a 243-acre tract in that
county; at least 150 acres in Baltimore County.

SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST

ELECTION AND DEATH: began to patent land in
Baltimore County in 1724 and consolidated his
holdings by 1752 into a 966-acre patent located
along the falls of the Patapsco River, part of
which was in Anne Arundel County; also patented
213 acres in Baltimore County in 1745. WEALTH
AT DEATH. DIED: between October 15 and Novem-
ber 7, 1759, in Baltimore County. PERSONAL
PROPERTY: TEV, £786.6.10 current money (in-
cluding 14 slaves and plate); FB, £31.6.4. LAND
1,221.5 acres in Baltimore and Anne Arundel
counties.

HAMMOND, CHARLES (ca 1670-1713) BORN
ca. 1670 in Anne Arundel County; probably
fourth son. NATIVE: third generation. RESIDED: in
