Cecil County; second son. NATIVE: fourth genera-
tion. RESIDED: in North Susquehanna and Oc-
tarara hundreds, Cecil County. FAMILY BACK-
GROUND. FATHER: Elihu Hall (1692-1753), of
Calvert, Anne Arundel, and Cecil counties; son of
Elisha Hall (1663-ca. 1716/17). MOTHER:
Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Harrison (?-
1716/17), of Calvert County. BROTHER: Elisha
Hall (1723-1757), who married in 1746 Ruth,
daughter of Jacob Hall. SISTERS. Elizabeth; Sarah,
who married Andrew Bay, of South Carolina.
OTHER KINSHIP: his father married first, in 1730
Elizabeth, daughter of Philip Coale. His great-
grandfather was Richard Hall (?-1688); his great-
uncle was Benjamin Hall (1667-1721); his great-
aunts were Rachel Hall (1671-1730), who married
Walter Smith (?-1711); Lucia Hall (1675-?), who
married John Smith (?-1738); and Sarah Hall
(1677-?), who married Robert Bradley (?-1724).
MARRIED on June 16, 1757, Catharine (1736-?),
daughter of John Orrick (?-1749) and wife Susan-
nah. Her brothers were John; Nicholas; and
Charles. Her sisters were Rachel; Rebecca; Sarah;
and Susanna. CHILDREN. SONS: Elihu (1758-ca.
1793), who married Charity; John (1760-1826);

James (1762-1793); Elisha John (1764-1835);
Charles (1767-1821); Samuel Chew (1769-?), who
never married; George Whitefield (1770-?), who
never married; Henry (1773-1808), a physician,
who married Hester, daughter of the Hon. Wil-
liam Maclay, the first U.S. senator from Pennsyl-
vania; and Washington (1776-?). DAUGHTERS: Su-
san (1766-1852), who married Robert Lyon
(1754-1842), of Baltimore County; Elizabeth Har-
rison (1772-?), who married first, (first name un-
known) Ogle, and second, (first name unknown)
Gordon; Catharine Orrick (1775-?), who married
(first name unknown) Churchman; and Julia Reed
(1778-?), who never married. PRIVATE CAREER.
EDUCATION: literate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: he
came from a Quaker family; his son Elihu was an
elder of the Presbyterian Church, West Notting-
ham, Cecil County, 1792. SOCIAL STATUS AND
ACTIVITIES: Mr., 1779; Esq., 1790. OCCUPATIONAL
PROFILE: probably a planter. PUBLIC CAREER.
LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Cecil
County, 1779-1780 (resigned on April 29, 1780).
LOCAL OFFICES: justice, Cecil County, 1756-1771
(quorum, 1758-1771), probably 1772-1776 (prob-
ably quorum; records missing), 1777 (quorum);
justice, Court of Oyer and Terminer and Gaol De-
livery, Cecil County, commissioned 1762; justice,
Orphans' Court, Cecil County, commissioned
1777. MILITARY SERVICE: 2nd major, Susque-
hanna Battalion, Maryland Militia, appointed
1766. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: His son, Elihu,
served in the First Maryland Regiment and was
taken prisoner at Staten Island in August 1777,
where he remained until exchanged in October
1780. He resigned in May 1781, but later served in
the Maryland Militia. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME.
PERSONAL PROPERTY: assessed value £627.0.0,
including 12 slaves and 8 oz. plate, 1783. LAND
AT FIRST ELECTION: 1,353 acres in Cecil County
(inherited 1,746 acres from his father in 1754, but
sold 393 acres of it by 1764). SIGNIFICANT

CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELECTION

AND DEATH: he was charged with 610 acres in
Cecil County, 1783. WEALTH AT DEATH. DIED:
between December 17, 1790, and February 16,
1791. LAND: 270 acres in Cecil County mentioned
in his will, plus several other tracts with unspeci-
fied acreage; may have had as much as 600 acres.
