ERTY: TEV, at least £1,907.9.8 current money (in-
cluding 26 slaves and old books). LAND: 2,296
acres in Prince George's County.

GANTT, THOMAS (?-ca. 1802). BORN: in Cal-
vert County; probably elder son. NATIVE: fourth
generation. RESIDED: in the First District, Calvert
County. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: Edward
Gantt (?-by 1783), son of Thomas Gantt (?-1765).
MOTHER: Elizabeth Wheeler. UNCLES: Fielder
Gantt (?-1807); Thomas Gantt (ca. 1710-1785).
AUNT: probably Ann Gantt, who married John
Brome (1703-1748). BROTHER: Edward (?-ca.
1811). SISTER: Mary, who married Bishop Thomas
John Claggett (1742-1816). FIRST COUSINS.
Thomas Gantt, Jr. (?-1808); Erasmus Gan tt (?-?);
Rachel Gantt (?-1793), who married Richard
Brooke (1716-1783); Sarah Gantt, who married
Osborn Sprigg (ca. 1741-1815); and Ann Gantt,
who married Thomas Harwood III (by 1757-by
1805). MARRIED Barbara, who subsequently mar-
ried George F. Janny, a Quaker. CHILDREN. SONS:

PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate. OCCUPA-
TIONAL PROFILE: physician. PUBLIC CAREER. LEG-
ISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Calvert County,
1780-1781, 1785, 1786-1787, 1787-1788, 1788,
1789, 1790, 1791-1792. LOCAL OFFICE: Maryland
Senate elector, Calvert County, elected 1791, 1801.

WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. PERSONAL PROP-
ERTY: assessed value £797.3.4, including 20 slaves
and 22 oz. plate, 1783. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION:
possibly 67 acres in Calvert County. SIGNIFICANT

CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELECTION

AND DEATH, inherited 826 acres in Calvert
County from his father by 1783. In return for act-
ing as security for Fielder Gantt (?-1807), he ac-
cepted a mortgage on Fielder's land and personal
property in Frederick County, which was later
sold to pay himself and Fielder's other creditors.
He purchased 259 acres in Calvert County in 1795
and sold 40 acres in Calvert County in 1801.
Gantt acquired 178 acres in Prince George's
County by 1796 and 45 acres in Anne Arundel
County prior to his death. WEALTH AT DEATH.
DIED. ca. 1802 in Calvert County. LAND: at least
3,070 acres in Calvert, Anne Arundel, and Prince
George's counties. IDENTIFICATION PROBLEMS.
Dr. Thomas Gantt, son of Edward Gantt (?-by
1783), has been assigned the legislative service
from Calvert County in the name of Thomas
Gantt, Jr., because he was consistently described
as being "of Calvert County" in the Frederick

County land records during the 1780s and he
termed himself "Dr. Thomas Gantt" or "Dr.
Thomas Gantt, Jr." in deeds recorded in those
land records. There was no other Thomas Gantt
of the appropriate age in Calvert County during
his period of service in the legislature.

GANTT, THOMAS, JR. (?-1808). BORN: in
Prince George's County, of age by 1758; probably
eldest son. NATIVE: fourth generation. RESIDED: in
Prince George's County until at least March,
1781; probably moved to Frederick County before
October 1781 where be remained until shortly af-
ter his father's death in 1785; moved back to
Prince George's County by July 1786 and lived
there until his death. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FA-
THER: Thomas Gantt (ca. 1710-1785), son of
Thomas Gantt (?-1765). MOTHER: Rachel Smith.
STEPMOTHER: Eleanor Hillary (?-1787). UNCLES
Fielder Gantt (?-1807); Edward Gantt (?-by 1783).
AUNTS: probably Ann Gantt, who married John
Brome (1703-1748); Sarah Smith, who married
Joseph HalHca. 1701-?); Tabitha Smith (ca. 1690-
1769), who married Thomas Sheredine (1699-
1752). BROTHERS Edward (ca. 1741-1837); John
(1740-?). HALF BROTHERS: Levi; Erasmus Gantt
(?-?); and Fielder (ca. 1764-1824). SISTER: Rachel
(?-1793), who married Richard Brooke (1716-
1783). HALF SISTERS: Elizabeth; Ann; Priscilla (?-
ca. 1784); and Sarah, who married Osborn Sprigg
(ca. 1741-1815). FIRST COUSINS: Thomas Gantt (?-
ca. 1 802); Ann Gantt, who married Thomas Har-
wood 111 (by 1757-by 1805); and Upton Sheredine
(1740-1800). MARRIED first, Susanna (1737-by
1782), daughter of James John Mackall (1717-
1772); niece of Samuel Hance (by 1732-?). Her
brothers were John Mackall (1740-1799); Benja-
min Mackall IV (1745-by 1810); James (1747-
1837); Richard (1749-?); and Thomas Mackall
(1751-1799). Her sisters were Priscilla, who mar-
ried Robert Bowie (ca. 1750-1818); Mary, who
married Edward Reynolds (?-?); Elizabeth; Sarah;
Barbara; Ann; and Margaret. MARRIED second, on
November 7, 1782, Sarah Eleanor, daughter of
William Potts (1718-1761), of Barbados, and wife
Sarah; granddaughter of Philip Lee (ca. 1681-
1744); niece of Richard Lee (ca. 1707-1787), Ar-
thur Lee (?-1760), Francis Lee (?-1749), and Han-
nah Lee, who married Joseph Sprigg (1736-1800).
Her brothers were Richard Potts (1753-1808);
William (?-by 1817), a merchant. Her sister was
Rebecca (?-by 1810), who married Benjamin
Mackall 1F(1745-?). Her first cousins were Philip
